This policy is developed in response to commitments in UNIFEM's Strategic Plan (2008-2013) to strengthen its evaluation function and to ensure its utility, credibility, independence and alignment with the United Nations Evaluation Group's Norms and Standards.

The purpose and role of evaluation in UNIFEM is to contribute to learning and knowledge on women's empowerment and gender equality; UNIFEM's internal and external accountability; and to inform decision-making on policies, developmental and organizational effectiveness and efficiency as well as programme design.
