The Boma Health Initiative (BHI) launched in 2017 and rolled out in 2019, is the main Government strategy for strengthening Community Health Systems in South Sudan. Community Health Systems are particularly important in South Sudan given the unique topography and other contextual issues that negatively impact on access to health care for most of the population. About 56% of the population lives more than 5 km away from a health facility and many people face significant challenges accessing health care due to the difficult and non-motorable terrain, security concerns and environmental constraints such as frequent flooding.
After two years of implementing the BHI, it is a critical time to assess progress and lessons learned so far in order to further improve the implementation of the BHI.
