The project's overall development goal was to enable the development of a more robust and extensive market for locally grown and processed medicinal plants| while contemporaneously enabling and encouraging conservation of such plants and their ecosystems in the forests| including by participating in measures directed at addressing climate change and increasing local awareness of the value of forest services| where forests are conserved and well managed. It also sought to promote the development of “access and benefit-sharing” as conceptualised in the Convention on Biological Diversity and its Nagoya Protocol| particularly in the context of the ancient traditional knowledge applicable to medicinal plants. The project was approved to receive a GEF grant of US $2,047,000.00| and a commitment of in-kind co-financing valued at US $2,500,000.00.
